Rocks.
Don't be fooled by the rocks that i got, i'm still (i'm still) planting in my pots. That's right. Nothing a little j. lo wordplay can't fix.
This may be a no brainer-certainly this is not rocket science-but it IS one of those "why didn't i think of that" moments. Because, people, this WORKS! Consistently ALL summer, no more dirt on my front steps. I seriously stand behind this. The other idea for keeping squirrels away, that gets pinned a millllllion times, that didn't work for me. But this works. Pin THIS a million times. Because i wish i would have known about this sooner.
This also keeps my cat Lily out of my indoor plants. Yet another genius idea from the boyfriend, one that i didn't fully grasp right away. When he said i needed to add rocks to keep her from digging, i assumed he meant the ones from our travels.
So, i tucked in a few heart shaped ones from Aruba and France, added a little pottery shards from Israel, some shells from Hawaii...and expected it to work. Not so, my friends. For outdoor use and for consistency across the top of the pot, you're gonna need the little stones that come in bags from the dollar store or Ikea.
Go forth and rock on.
Get it???
I refrained from using this one, but i can't get it out of my head now. "I like the way you work it...no diggity." Remember that song?
J.Lo ain't got nothin' on me.

Smart! I typically add them just to finish the pots off, plus I love rocks. We don't have a problem with squirrels but I do have one outdoor potted plant that has been messed with many times AND it doesn't have rocks. Must add them now!! Well, after I repot the thing.
ReplyDeleteOK, this is a DUH moment for me also! I wouldn't have thought of that either. They look nice also and I hope you put your collection of heart rocks and shells should be in a special place.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Linda

House on the Way
Yay! I discovered the same thing this summer - exposed dirt is an open invitation to the little buggers. I also put a cheapie owl statue from Harbor Frieght out on the pation. no more squirrels!
ReplyDeleteGreat tip! Squirrels not only made a mess in my potted plants they also destroyed our patio cushions and grill cover. They used the fabric to make their nest.
ReplyDeleteNeat tips. How did you manage to make a post about rocks so entertaining? Haha. Thanks for linking up to The DIY'ers!
ReplyDeleteYou are a PURE GENIUS. Doing this little trick now, or like, yesterday;)
ReplyDeleteGoing to do this. I am sick of the squirrels digging in my plants too. They are even eating my potato vine that I have in pots. Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea and it looks nice too. Thanks so much for visiting me!
ReplyDeleteHow smart is this. I never thought of this idea. Now I need to revamp everything.
ReplyDeleteRocks are a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, who knew? Also, not only decorative and keeps the diggin from happening, but also conserves water, as it acts like a mulch protective layer - win/win/win.
ReplyDeleteNope, J Lo has nothin' on you!
: - )
Although I have heard of the rock solution I had not heard of the Irish Spring one. Imagine that!
ReplyDelete:)
I am constantly sweeping up dirt that the squirrels have dug out of my pots! And I really get annoyed when they dig up the plants! I'll have to give this a try!
ReplyDeleteI have found that the rocks keep the soil in place when I water my potted plants too.
ReplyDeleteTraci
It seems so obvious, yet I had never thought about this. I may actually bring plants back into the house! Ann
ReplyDeleteThe squirrels love to dig up my plants too. They usually stayed in the yard not bothering the plants I had on the porch until recently. I sprinkled cayenne pepper around them and they haven't bothered them since.
ReplyDeleteanother great thing about the rocks... they hold in moisture which is really helpful for outdoor potted plants that get really thirsty--like my hibiscus.
