My fall stairs shamed the boyfriend into powerwashing

It is the end of October.  Pretty clearly time to talk Halloween.  And still, as we have the entirety of November so stop the Xmas commercials and store displays would you please, time to talk of this glorious season of Autumn.

And with that, brought decorating.  And with that brought new pots-seriously, who looks for flower pots in the middle of October?  And with that brought mega super deals on said pots (it only took 7 stores but I love the modern feel, the fancy water system inside, and the thick material they're made of).

And with that brought SHAME!  SHAMEFUL, these stairs!  SHAAAAMMMEEE!!!

I guess with the green/terracotta they didn't look so bad, but with these black ones, they match the stairs!  The dirty, grimy, BLACK stairs!  Look away.

Distract yourself with boxwoods and kale.

Ah, the wonders of power washing!  TAN!  Not black.  Contrasting, totally don't match the pots, TAN stairs!  Lily is amazed at the transformation, and the quick response of blog shaming.

As am I.

Some Halloween garden goodies.

My favorite metal fellow.

Let's look at the pumpkins before they are undoubtedly ravaged by the most hideous of all beasts.  I'm talking about squirrels.  One of the many banes of my existence.

Enjoy, Happy Halloween, and Happy FALL!

Whispy Hwhispy redone wreath

You know on the Golden Girls, how Blanche is all Southern, like exaggeratedly so. I'm sure the words "Why I do dee-clayuh" (declare) have been uttered on more than one occasion. The episode my friends and I always referenced was where she lamented "Why, big daddy, why?"  except it came out exaggeratedly Hwhy, big daddy, Hwhy.  All breathy with the H first.

So this redone wreath, with all it's whispy goodness, isn't just whispy.  It's Hwhispy.  All exaggeratedly whispy.  Say it aloud with me, big exhalation of breath, HWHISPY.

I love all those greens and bushy things poking out every which (Hwhich) way.

Did you know they sell whispy things at the dollar store?

whispy orange fall wreath

I do dee-clayuh, I did not.

I plucked off all the sunflowers, cut off a lot of the green leaves, and added the whispy.  And by added I mean shoved them all in there, no glue gun required.  Yay for cheap instant gratification.

It's officially fall in my home...

A punched up living room

Did everyone else experience that gorgeous little teaser of fall weather we had?  Did you get out your leaves and your gourds and your owls and your pumpkins?  Yeah....not me.  Not with the weather going back into the 90s this week.  I can't think boots and sweaters with the weather calling for shorts.

And what's a gal to decorate with when the weather patterns all wonky?  This gal focuses on her love of all things travel and all things cheap.

Cheap as in Christmas ornaments from the clearance section used on tabletops.

Cheap as in ceramic "paper" airplane from a thrift store.

Cheap as in more ornaments.

I like the touch of gold they bring in, and in fact-

I'm tired of this.  Don't get me wrong-my quest to debrownify was achieved-but instead of feeling brown, i felt blue.  And white.  And yes, brown.  Very cold feeling.  And i wanted to walk in here this summer and feel colorful.

So i tried out some cray floral curtains.

This actually works.

And they're bright and fun, and i don't walk in here and get assaulted with a color theme.  I just get assaulted with color.  And who doesn't want that am i right?!

And although they're floral, they've got warm tones of rust and eggplant and marigold that remind me of what i love about fall. Even if it might not feel like it yet.

So these puppies are staying up til winter, when the browns and blues return.

I did have to adjust my circular art since it was too much with the florals, and too color specific.

Totally on trend with the "made by a two year old" painterly look.  Some a little more trendy (ahem) than others.

Colorful living room, i love you and your floral curtained self.  But i wouldn't turn away some boot and sweater weather soon.

Is it boot and sweater weather yet by you? Send some this way!

DIY DSLR Camera Bag

Ok, so you know those Alaska pictures were taken with a fancy pants camera.  And a fancy pants camera needs protecting.  And a fancy pants camera protecting bag needs to look fancy pants itself.  And we all know how much those cost.  And we all know i'm a self proclaimed cheap ass.

Let's put out there that I'm intimidated by things such as sewing.  And ironing.  And math.

But even the expensive fancy pants bags didn't seem to have as many pockets as this girl needs.  Or they were many pocketed, but smaller in size.  So the first step was finding a bag that had minimal taper at the top, so it was wide enough to reach the camera quickly and easily, had handles but also a cross body strap, and would accommodate for more than just the camera and lens.  This was more difficult than I had thought, and necessitated stopping at 3 stores.

And then I found the cheapest foam option-

and lined the bottom with a 1 inch thick piece, used a carving knife to make the sides a 1/2 thick so it could fit more and close-

and cut the 1 inch thick sides to shape.  Easy.  You can see the bag does taper slightly up top, but there's a lot of give.  It's got a big mouth.  Like a certain mother in law I know.  Burn!

The excess foam was used for dividers, and when the camera was inside, held everything taut.

The foam scratching the screen was a concern, so I put one of those protector films on it.  If you wanted to sew the foam into fabric (not happening here) or maybe glue the foam into fabric, you probably wouldn't need a film over the screen.

Of course I could take all the foam out and use this a regular purse, too.

This extra flap and outside pockets really made this bag that much more workable than some of the more expensive options.

I'm ridiculously proud of myself, for saving money but also for rocking this out.

Cost breakdown:
Bag from Marshalls, 35.00
Foam from Walmart, 7.00 for 15x17x1 2 pack
$42 for a fancy pants looking fancy pants camera bag.  Seriously.

What's your latest DIY proud moment?

Anniversary trip to Alaska-Interior

I've been back from our anniversary trip to Alaska for two weeks already.  It's sort of depressing to not have anything to look forward to, so I keep reminiscing about the amazing experience we had.  Remember when I said I hoped to see moose babies/eagles/seal/bears/caribou/whales/the mountain? Well, we did.  We actually saw all those things, and I feel truly blessed with our trip.  Don't you feel like Alaska, namely Denali National Park, should be teeming with wildlife?  After learning that they have over 6 million acres to spread out on in the park alone, I can see why an animal sighting could very well not have been in the cards.  It definitely would affect my feelings about the trip as a whole if it felt like we missed something.

S and I really felt that if we were going all the way there, we should do it right.  So we splurged on the tour that gave us one week on land before the cruise, and we added on one night in Fairbanks so that we could have a day to explore on our own before we started on our escorted land tour with 50 other people.  It was this extra day in Fairbanks when we drove out to Chena Hot Springs that got it all started on the right foot.  Moose!  Blurry moose from a distance, but my goodness, moose none the less!

And then....moose babies!  S thought they were deer, but I knew what they were!

And where there are moose babies, surely there are moose mamas?

There you are girl!  And she got way more comfortable with the water...

I promise this is not just a horse, ok?

When we managed to pull ourselves away from this miracle sighting (seriously, it is.  I live right outside Philadelphia.  We don't see moose around these parts.) we headed to our destination, the ice museum/hotel at Chena Hot Springs Resort.  You're going into a building that is literally freezing, so beforehand I put on boots, gloves, and donned the heavy parka they give everyone before you go inside.

We sat down here, at the ice bar, to have our appletini in our ice glasses.  Let's just say I was super glad I had the gloves on!

One of the mammoth ice sculptures carved by the husband/wife team behind many carving awards.  There were 4 igloo bedrooms for anyone brave enough, but they said no one has actually made it through the whole night.

After this long day of museums and driving (eating at place featured on Diners, Drive ins, and Dives, University of Alaska's Museum of the North, Fountainhead antique auto museum, city of North Pole) we finished at Silver Gulch Brewing Co. for some local spirits.  I love wine, and often bring wine home as my souvenir from our travels so that I can have something totally unique to that area.  If there are no wineries, than brewpubs it is!

The next day we started our official escorted tour, so with our 50 new friends we headed out to Gold Dredge 8 for some gold panning, something that the boyfriend and I really wanted to try.

And you know what, gold panning is hard work.  Circling, dipping, dripping, circling...it was quite an arm workout!

Our whopping 24 dollars worth, combined.  Not a fortune, but I was impressed with this guy-

I'm calling it a nugglet.  Not so much as a nugget, but definitely more 3 dimensional than a fleck.  A little nugget.  A nugglet, if you will.

Now that, THAT big mama is a NUGGET!  Can you imagine coming across something like that??

After Fairbanks (Land of the Midnight Sun) where it was 90 degrees, we were glad to make our way towards Healey, to Denali National Park, where it was cooler at around mid 60's to 70 degrees.  This tour into the National Park was an 8 hour tour, and one that I would highly recommend.  Other tours (which were less money) do not go as deep into the park, so your chances of seeing wildlife or the mountain are diminished.

It started off as a really cloudy day, and with the wildfires in the area, we weren't sure how it would affect things.  So this is the mountain I keep talking about-Denali, otherwise known as Mt. McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America.

I got a little Denali happy, but i'll spare you more photos.  I tried different settings with the camera, and the clouds and haze were changing, too.  At over 20,000 feet, there's still snow on the mountain.

Caribou in the park.  Did you know that caribou and reindeer are the same thing?  In the wild they're caribou, but in captivity they are reindeer.

C'mon people, what is so difficult about making out this is a bear?  Hmmm??

Back at the ranger station there was an informational rest stop, and I tried my hand at an artsy shot of a moose antler.

And a rare sighting on the blog-me!  Me holding an antler, looking all fall like.  And happy.

Mushing is the state sport, and in winter the frozen lakes are used for practice.  So those lucky people with lakefront property really do use it year round.

Yeah, I found me some local wine!  So so delicious!  I actually bought the strawberry and rhubarb kind after it was recommended, but the winery was in Homer so there was no way to tour or visit it.

From Denali we went to Mt. McKinley via glass top train, which was another thing on my bucket list that can now get crossed off.

Mt. McKinley lodge, like the Denali lodge, had a real middle of nowhere feel.  Much like the rest of Alaska.

It was an hour outside of Talkeetna, the little town that was the inspiration for Northern Exposure, and home of another brewpub.  Sadly, not a winery in sight.

After a week of touring the Interior, we relaxed, took in the view, and crossed our fingers that the great weather would continue for our cruise portion.

We have absolutely no regrets about spending the extra money to have an extra week exploring the Interior of Alaska.  If you can swing it, please, do it!

Who's with me on the brewpub/winery thing?
